This isn’t about running inference on existing models—it’s about training next-generation AI systems at scale.

These two announcements together signal something founders should pay attention to: the infrastructure layer of AI is globalizing faster than the application layer. Crunchbase’s analysis of AI seed trends confirms this pattern: over $9 billion flowed into AI seed rounds in the past six months, with investors favoring cybersecurity, multimedia AI, robotics, and backend desk work automation. Notice what’s not on that list? Generic chatbots. Horizontal productivity tools. “AI-powered” anything without a clear vertical focus.

If you’re an early-stage founder building on AI, the strategic imperative is clear: identify what you own that a model provider can’t replicate. That might be proprietary data, deep domain expertise, workflow integration, or physical-world components. Every interaction starts fresh. There’s no accumulated knowledge. The agent that processed 1,000 customer support tickets hasn’t learned anything that the agent processing ticket 1,001 can use.

World Labs’ $1 billion raise for spatial AI is a vertical bet—they’re building models specifically designed to understand and interact with the 3D physical world. That’s a problem domain where generic LLMs fall short, and where specialized training data and model architectures create real moats.

InScope’s $14.5 million round follows the same pattern. Financial reporting is a specific, painful problem with regulatory requirements, domain-specific terminology, and workflows that generic AI tools can’t handle well. The founders’ backgrounds at companies with complex financial operations (Flexport, Miro, Hopin, Thrive Global) give them insight that pure AI researchers wouldn’t have.

Even in the seed funding data, the verticals getting funded are specific: cybersecurity (where the adversarial nature of the problem requires specialized approaches), multimedia (where the inputs are fundamentally different from text), robotics (where physical-world interaction creates entirely new challenges), and backend automation (where integration with legacy systems is the hard part).

The horizontal AI companies that are winning—the OpenAIs and Anthropics of the world—are winning because they own the foundational models. If you’re not building a foundational model, and you’re not building something deeply vertical, you’re stuck in the middle. And as the Google VP’s warning suggests, the middle is exactly where you don’t want to be.

For seed-stage founders choosing a market, this suggests a clear strategy: pick a vertical where you have genuine domain expertise, where the data requirements are specific enough that generic models underperform, and where the willingness to pay is high enough to support a real business. The “AI for X” framing only works if X is specific enough that you can build defensible expertise and hard enough that generic tools can’t solve it.
